Just got done with my first motorcycle lesson. In the rain!
It was a blast. It’s a very powerful feeling, being on a motorcycle, even the small one the motorcycle school is using. I’ve done straight lines, turns, circles, figure eights, upshifting and downshifting. The toughest have been right turns (I kept pulling back on the throttle and accelerating) and downshifting (I lack a certain smoothness).
I’ve got one more prep lesson before my full-on basic rider course, which will allow me to waive the road test for my motorcycle license. The plan has been to get a scooter, but I might very well go for a bike instead.
I’ve noticed that Zuzu is starting to do a few things that Sugarplum used to do. These are things that Zuzu never did before.
Some of these things are charming — like how she’s begun sleeping with her paw thrown over her face like Sugarplum used to do.
Some of these things are not so charming — like kicking both litter and poop out of the litterbox.
It’s noon, I just got back from the Left Coast, where I had a job interview at a very nice law school with seductive weather, and even though I’ve been up for 30 hours, I’m not at all sleepy.
Gah.
I’d really love to be able to sleep on planes. I keep meaning to get a small prescription for Valium or something before I fly, which might help knock me out (or maybe just make me not care that I can’t sleep). Not a damn wink on the red eye.
This was my first full second-round interview with the Dreaded Presentation. Which I sort of winged on format, because I haven’t been able to get much of an answer from anyone about what a DP should consist of. But I was able to fill my time completely, keep the interest of my audience, and answer questions. I also did well during the panel interview portion, where I was interviewed by separate panels of the librarians and the technical services staff — and I sucked up shamelessly to the latter. I’ve certainly figured out that it doesn’t help to direct someone to a source if it’s not there because tech services doesn’t have the resources to get it back on the shelf or update it.
It helped, too, that the director of the law library has been pretty open about the fact that he really wants me to succeed. So I didn’t feel that there was much skepticism to overcome. I should know soon, but I’m also interviewing with other schools that probably won’t schedule their second-round interviews until early September.
Itchy dog is itchy:

Thanks for all the kind words about Sugarplum. The hardest part was waiting for a signal that she’d had enough; the night before last, she started refusing food, then her breathing got dramatically worse. So it was time; I called the vets in the morning and brought her in yesterday afternoon. The vet who’d saved her life a couple of times was the one to end it. The hardest part was bringing the empty carrier back home.
Junebug and Zuzu seem to be wondering where she is, though it’s not the first time I’ve taken her away and not come back with her. They still have each other, and I have them. And Junebug had a bath and a fresh application of powdered neem oil for her flea issues as well.
Have to say, although I was bummed out on the bus coming home with the empty carrier, it brightened my day considerably to see that Prop 8 had been declared unconstitutional. I love my iPhone.
If stripping various Amendments out of the Constitution is up for consideration, how about we start with the Second?
